As we start a New Year we thought it would be helpful to start with gut health. Our gut is lined with microbes. Microbes in our body outnumber human cells 10:1. In our guts alone they make up the most complex ecosystems in the world. Think about that for a moment. Each of us carries around an ecosystem more complex than a coral reef in the ocean. These microbes make up our unique microbiome.

Our microbiome contributes to our health in a myriad of ways. It helps digest our food and therefore greatly impacts our nutritional state. It makes up a vital part of our immune system as well as contributing to hormone balance, brain health and much more. Poor microbiome health can also contribute to many diseases. These include auto-immune disease, GI disease, depression, anxiety, joint pain, and much much more.
This is why we want to start the year talking about our microbiomes and gut health. Working to assess where our patients gut health is at and working with them to improve it is a vital part of our practice. It is important to address what is contributing to the damage and then come up with a plan to that is tailored to the individual to improve their gut health. As gut health improves we often see marked improvement in many areas of health.
